Africa Power Scheme
"Building the infrastructure for sustainable, renewable energy projects in Africa"

AfricaConnect will establish the "Africa Power Scheme" (APS). The emphasis of APS will be on self-help, self-management, and self-manufacture for the communities it serves.

The Africa Power Scheme provides a mechanism to assess the needs and assist in the development of sustainable renewable energy projects in rural and peri-urban communities in Africa as a key factor for economic and social development.

It would look to support projects that were designed to provide a sustainable source of power for education, health and small enterprises. These are areas where the provision of energy services could have a significant multiplier effect for the long-term benefit of the community, and where the level of services is greater than those required for subsistence living.

The Africa Power Scheme proposes to develop its own projects and work with third-party developers to ensure that projects are constructed and operated according to ethical and sustainable criteria. These criteria will be assessed at the start of the project and the developer's performance in operation will be monitored. The emphasis on "sustainability" serves to eliminate the substantial waste of resources associated with failed projects, of which there have been many in the past. Affordability is essential.
